Our Concrete Polishing Process

At Rock My Floor, we follow a proven multi-step polishing process designed to give you a clean, dust-free, and highly durable finish that lasts for years — with optional upgrades like burnishing or re-burnishing for long-term gloss and shine.

1. Mechanical Surface Prep with Metal Bond Tooling

We begin by mechanically grinding the concrete using metal bond diamonds to remove surface contaminants, open the pores, and flatten the slab. This step is critical to achieving proper refinement and long-term durability.

We use multiple passes of coarse to medium metal bond tooling depending on the floor's condition and desired finish level.

2. Transitioning to Resin Bonds

After the initial grind, we transition to resin bond tooling — using progressively finer grits to refine the surface and remove any scratches left by metal bonds. This is where the natural shine of the concrete begins to emerge.

We customize the resin sequence based on your chosen finish level:

• Matte / Satin finish: Stop at 400 or 800 grit

• High-gloss: Continue to 1500 or 3000 grit

3. Application of Densifier

Once the surface is prepped and refined, we apply a lithium or sodium-based densifier. This penetrates deep into the concrete to harden the surface, reduce porosity, and eliminate dusting for good.

The densifier chemically reacts with free lime in the concrete to create a denser, harder floor that’s more resistant to staining, traffic, and moisture.

4. Polishing & Optional Guard Application

After the densifier cures, we complete the final polishing steps using high-grit resin diamonds. Depending on the location and intended use, we can also apply a guard — a light topical sealer designed to enhance stain resistance and improve gloss levels.

The guard is burnished into the floor using high-speed machines to create a sleek, professional finish.

5. Final Burnishing for Gloss and Clarity

On projects where maximum gloss is desired, we use a high-speed propane burnisher to heat and polish the surface — further tightening the concrete pores and amplifying reflectivity.

This step gives polished concrete its signature “wet look” without coatings.

6. Optional Re-Burnishing for Long-Term Shine

Over time, we offer re-burnishing services to restore and maintain the high-gloss appearance. This is especially valuable in high-traffic commercial environments where long-term aesthetics matter.
